A map of Cuban exports › Cuba › Granma – Official voice of the PCC

Placing attractive, competitive products and services on the international scene, ensuring that goods made in Cuba continue to consolidate their current markets and attract others, is a basic premise for our economy, in order to increase and diversify exports, as one of the country’s principal sources of income.
In this context, the Export Map – a platform developed by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment (Mincex) with the collaboration of academic specialists and other entities – focuses on the comprehensive promotion of the nation’s exportable product lines.
According to Lietsa Peña Pacheco, director of Exports of Goods and Services at the Ministry, told Granma, the new platform is a dynamic, interactive tool that allows Cuban producers to display their wares and present information in real time.
The Map, which has been available on the Internet since last October, is freely accessible at the url http://mapaexportaciones.mincex.gob.cu, and any user may visit the site to see the information displayed with no need for a password or prior registration, she said.
Nonetheless, she pointed out, the tool is just taking its first steps and is undergoing a process of improvement and updating, since data, graphics and other content continue to be added to contribute to users’ experience and improve the effectiveness of searches.
She commented, “We will have a better map, a more complete one, as each territory places its information and takes advantage of the opportunities and promotion provided by the platform.”
And the fact is that, for its objective to be met, the Map needs the support of the specialists in Foreign Trade departments in all provinces and the Isle of Youth special municipality, since they are the only parties authorized to add, edit or delete information from their territories, she explained.
In the end, she stressed, this will benefit the territory itself, since it will not only make its exportable items known to the world, but will also allow comparing the situation in any given area and with that of others.
Currently, there are 669 entities producing exportable goods and/or services present on the Map and, of these, 23 are forms of non-state management  – cooperatives, the self-employed or small businesses – reported Odet Arias Montero, Mincex specialist in commercial policy.
She pointed out that there is much data still to be incorporated. Such is the case, she added, of micro, small and medium-sized companies currently being established. The good thing, she said, is that they have the option.
Today, she continued, entities that export, both state enterprises and any other economic actor, including productive poles, can add their information and data to the system, based on the collaboration they have established with companies authorized to conduct foreign trade activities.

The Map is projected to include all available, useful information on exportable items, including their specifications, origin, exporters, producers, local projects related to the product or service, ports of departure from the country, transportation routes, warehouses, destination, etc, she reiterated.
HOW IT WORKS
This computer system allows users to access a database with export indicators, reported Dariel Trujillo, one of the developers and specialists in charge of the project.
“We are saying, for example, that when accessing the platform, the user may choose what he or she wants to see in a geo-referential manner, either by provinces, municipality or entity linked to exports, such as a state enterprise or a cooperative,” he explained.
Likewise, once the option is selected, displayed is contact information for persons in charge of foreign trade in the different provinces, the volume of goods available in the territory and the status of the exportable product or service of interest (being promoted, under development or available), he added.
This data can be used to generate quantitative and qualitative reports, as well as demographic reports and market analysis, he noted.
“By geo-referencing a production company, we can see the surrounding area, its urban and socioeconomic characteristics, whether it is a school, a hospital, a factory, etc. and, on that basis, focus initiatives and projects for local development.”
Another advantage of the Map, he said, is that it identifies Cuba’s exportable items for foreign clients, based on the characteristics of those markets; while, it promotes competitiveness and seeks to diversify the range of Cuban products and services that can be inserted in the international market.
The Mincex specialist, Odet Arias, also emphasized that the project supports local development, and among its functions is to provide the provinces and municipalities with a comprehensive view of their productive and export potential, as well as information on the work force. “This will be possible thanks to demographic data from each locality, which will be included in the Map.”
NECESSARY ALLIANCES
The development of this tool was also made possible thanks to the ties that have been developed with academia and other entities.
For example, during a governmental visit, led Party First Secretary and President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, to the province of Guantánamo, a proposal was made to Mincex to strengthen its relations with the University there, where work had already begun on geo-referencing systems. Specialists involved were able to immediately see how information on local development could add value to the Map, recalled Peña Pacheco.
“This new proposal was ambitious because of the complexity of developing the software and required new technical capabilities that Mincex did not have, so alliances were established in search of solutions to the problematic lack of human resources and technical abilities,” she explained.
From there, she said, working agreements were signed with the universities of Havana and Guantánamo, in addition to the experience gained by the Center for the Promotion of Foreign Trade and Investment of Cuba (Procuba) in promotional activities.

At this time, she said, we are working on a user’s manual to make the interactive features of the system, and all its options, more accessible to those who visit the site. Likewise, provincial governments are working on approaching producers to show them the opportunities that open up by including their exportable products and services on the platform.
Addressing this issue, Ivón Garzón, the Ministry’s deputy director for Exports, commented that this database will also serve as a useful tool for decision makers at all levels of the country, since with this knowledge, they can identify potential markets.
The Minrex Export Map constitutes will serve as an essential tool in the daily work of both exporting companies and foreign clients, who will be able to access technical data on exportable products.
Among the plans to continue improving the system is the incorporation of the Port-Transport-Internal Economy Operation chain, which, among other advantages, will facilitate accurate estimations of the distance between an exit point – airports, railroad stations, seaports – and the site of production. With this data, appropriate logistical decisions can be made.

Sunnyside wins extra-inning thriller, advances to Majors state title game | ALLSPORTSTUCSON.com

QUEEN CREEK — Alexa Cirerol’s grounder to first base hugged the line and could have bounced foul at any moment with Sunnyside’s fate in the balance Tuesday night in the Arizona Little League State Softball Tournament elimination-bracket final.

Camryn Moraga, who earlier singled and was on second base with two outs after Yzabella Armenta’s perfectly laid sacrifice bunt, broke from the time Cirerol’s bat smacked the ball. Moraga never slowed to watch which way the ball would roll.

“I just got excited and pumped up,” Moraga said of how she felt rounding third and heading home full speed.

Cirerol said of the grounder as she headed to first base, “I didn’t know if it was going to go over first base … I’m glad it did.”

The ball took a bounce off the base toward foul territory before Phoenix Arcadia first baseman Reagan Jackson could get to it. She hurriedly tried to track down the ball as it rolled away.

Jackson retrieved the ball and threw home to catcher Joie Ramirez, who positioned herself just in front of home plate. Moraga slid feet first (important to note here). The ball reached Ramirez’s glove. In a cloud of dust, Moraga beat the tag and was ruled safe.

“I had a little bit of doubts, but I was just really relieved when (the ump) said that I was safe,” said Moraga, who was mobbed by her jubilant teammates near the Sunnyside dugout.

Sunnyside’s thrilling 5-4 victory in the seventh inning puts it into the winner-take-all championship game Wednesday against Cactus Foothills. Sunnyside, which lost to Cactus Foothills 10-6 on Friday in the winner’s bracket final, will get another chance against the team from Cave Creek at 6:30 p.m. at Desert Mountain Park in Queen Creek.

The winner will represent Arizona in the West Regional at San Bernardino, Calif., that starts July 24.

One of the cool things of covering these Little League games is interviewing players who’ve never been interviewed before. Alexa Cirerol is one of them. Even cooler, Sunnyside’s fans cheering for her during the interview after she had the game-winning RBI tonight. pic.twitter.com/D3n9SAkRGU

“This brings a lot of momentum,” Sunnyside manager Henry Pacho said of Tuesday night’s victory. “The girls get fired up. When they come and do what they do and have fun, I believe in them. I know they can take it far.

“It’s all how they perform. As long as they don’t get down in the dugout and make sure they are lifted up, I know they can go far in this tournament. I’ve got a great group of girls.”

From the first inning to Arcadia’s last at-bats in the seventh inning, Sunnyside’s resiliency was put to the test.

Arcadia’s Angie Falls, who pitched an effective complete game, walked with one out in the seventh and ran toward home on an errant throw to first base following Sidnee Benken’s grounder to shortstop. The ball bounced far away from Moraga at first base, Falls kept going and slid head first into home plate to avoid the tag by Armenta, the catcher.

Sliding head first is illegal in Majors softball and Falls was ruled out. Anyssa Pacho, Henry’s daughter, got the last batter to strike out to end the inning with Benken on second base.

The game remained tied at 4 and Sunnyside’s game-winning rally in the bottom of the seventh followed with Moraga starting things with a single with one out.

“They had a tough pitcher; she threw a lot of junk,” Henry Pacho said of Falls, who finished with 11 strikeouts and four walks. “It was fastball, changeup, fastball, changeup, changeup, fastball … It’s hard to adjust. It’s hard for the girls to adjust — any team. They have a good pitcher. I wouldn’t take anything from that team. They battled it out.

“It was a great battle. My girls adjusted at the end. Hey, we got a shot up the baseline and brought a run in for the win, so they did a good job. Proud of them.”

The battle started in the first inning after Arcadia opened the game with two runs following walks and a succession of wild pitches and passed balls.

Sunnyside responded in the bottom of the first after Yzenia Escarcega led off with a walk. Carissa Palomarez, a member of the famed Palomarez family at Sunnyside, followed with a deep fly ball to center field that bounced twice off the top of the 10-foot high chain-link fence for the home run.

“I thought it bounced off the tree and then came back in, so that got me freaked out for a little bit,” said Carissa, who is also an elite-level swimmer. “I think it gave us a good enough energy. It got the girls up and everything.”

Among the Palomarez family in attendance were legendary Sunnyside High School baseball coach Ernie Palomarez, Carissa’s grandfather who is in the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame.

Her great grandfather Joe Palomarez, noted for his fastpitch softball pitching career back in the day when the Tucson Rattlers played in a pro league at Santa Rita Park, was also in attendance with a large group of family and friends from the Sunnyside community.

Sunnyside boys varsity basketball coach Joel Palomarez, Ernie’s son and Carissa’s uncle, was also in attendance, as was Moraga’s parents Omar Moraga (a former Sunnyside and Arizona baseball standout) and Selina Encinas (a noted former player for Sunnyside and Pima College’s softball teams).

Sunnyside took a 3-2 lead after Armenta led off the second inning with a walk, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. Cirerol’s ground out to second base scored Armenta.

Arcadia then rallied to tie the game at 3 in the third inning loading the bases before Benken walked to score Isabella Piazza, who earlier singled.

Anyssa Pacho led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and stole second before scoring on Moraga’s double to right-center, putting Sunnyside ahead again 4-3.

Arcadia responded in the top of the sixth after McKenna Hackett walked and reached second on a passed ball. With two outs Sofia Pacheco blooped a single to center scoring Hackett to tie the game at 4.

Sunnyside had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the sixth after Escarcega singled and Carissa Palomarez walked with one out. They moved to third and second base on a double steal before Falls managed to get the last two batters to pop out to second base.

Sunnyside left nine runners on base, eight of them in scoring position. Arcadia had a similar challenge going against Moraga and Pacho in the circle, stranding eight runners, five of them who were on second and third base.

“It was a great game; these are the games that we want to play,” Henry Pacho said. “They’re exciting. They get everybody’s blood going.”

SNARK WEEK: Tit Swags –

Support Frock Flicks with a small donation! During Snark Week and beyond, we’re grateful for your monthly pledges for exclusive content via Patreon or your one-time contributions via PayPal to offset the costs of running this site. You can even buy our T-shirts and swag. Think of this like supporting public broadcasting, but with swearing and no tax deductions!

I have a feeling I’m going to upset some costumers and re-enactors with this post, but we need to talk about tit swags, people. Like head necklaces, tit swags are a trope that arose out of a misunderstanding of what was being seen in historical portraiture, then Hollywood just ran with it.

So, what is a tit swag, you ask? Like its head necklace counterpart, tit swags typically show up as a necklace that has been pinned to the front of a bodice and looks as if the necklace is suspended by the nipples. Though by no means exclusive to a particular film era, tit swags usually are found in movies set in the 16th century.

Eleanor of Aquitaine only threatened us with the idea.

Lest you think we let our favorite films off the hook during Snark Week, I will point out that 1) I love Anne of the Thousand Days (1969) and think the costumes are fabulous, and 2) those pearls are definitely suspended at nipple level. Pretty much textbook tit swag.

A subtle example from Las Aventuras del Capitan Alatriste (2015).

Sometimes the swag is suspended close to the armpits, or in this example from The Musketeers (2014-16), affixed to whatever that funky shoulder strap is supposed to be.

I tried really hard to find a better image of this scene from Henry VIII (2008) where Emily Blunt is rocking the tit swag, but this will have to do. It looks to me like it’s a long chain suspended from the neckline, but it’s been ages since I’ve watched this show. BTW, this is another gown from Anne of the Thousand Days that has had a number of overhauls over the years.

I’m counting this from The Tudors (2007-10) as a tit swag, even though it’s less swag-y than the other examples.

I gave up trying to figure out what was going on with this bodice, from Bathory: Countess of Blood (2008), but I finally decided it falls into tit swag territory.

“But Sarah,” I can hear the screams already, “I can document tit swags in 16th-century portraits!”

Ah, but can you? Like the head necklace, there are a handful of historical portraits that, if examined uncritically, could lead one to mistakenly believe that tit swags are a legit documentable thing. Let’s examine some examples:

Portrait of Margaret of France, by Clouet, c. 1560.

Some people would say this is totally an example of a period tit swag, however, I will point out two things:

First, notice where the swag appears to end. It looks like it terminates at her armpits, and not suspended by her nipples.

Second, look closer:

The swag actually appears to attach higher up on her shoulder, which argues that this is probably a necklace that actually is pinned along the shoulder line and disappears into the shoulder rolls.

Oh, sure, that’s just my conjecture. How do I know for certain that it actually is a necklace that loops around her shoulders? Well, ok, I don’t know for 100% certain, but I do happen to have documentation that supports the supposition:

Portrait of a woman by Clouet, c. 1560

Please refer to the giant red arrow pointing at the double strand of pearls following the line of the sitter’s shoulder.

Want another example?

Catherine de Medici, by a follower of Clouet, c. 1565-1570.

I can do this all day…

Portrait of Jeanne d’Albret, by Clouet.

Portrait of Anna d’Este, by Clouet.

Margot de Valois, by Clouet, 1572.

Portrait of Beatrix Pacheco, Countess of Montbel and Entremonts, by Clouet, c. 1550.

Why so many examples by Clouet, you ask? Well, for starters he was a prolific painter of fashionable women in the 16th century. Second, he’s incredibly detailed, so you do see these tiny little details which might otherwise be lost to lesser painters. Seriously, you can’t go wrong with François Clouet if you’re at all interested in 16th-century female clothing.

Anyway, I think I’ve made my point. Tit swags are not a thing.

Dana White Dismisses Fighter: ‘Might Be the First Death’

UFC president Dana White recently dismissed Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison, downplaying her MMA prowess.

Kayla Harrison might have just collected her second $1 million check from the Professional Fighters League, but she shouldn’t be considered one of the female MMA greats, according to the UFC president.

Kayla Harrison

GettyJudoka Kayla Harrison poses for a photo with her Olympic gold medal in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

During UFC 268 fight week, White spoke with Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole and briefly touched on Harrison being known as one of the best female fighters on the planet.

“Kayla Harrison hasn’t fought anybody yet,” White said via MMA Junkie. “She hasn’t fought anybody.”

Harrison, who has two gold medals in judo, is 12-0 as a professional MMA combatant. She’s fought her whole career in PFL, but she became a free agent after winning the 2021 PFL Women’s Lightweight Tournament earlier this month.

Amanda Nunes Could Potentially Kill Harrison’s Prior Opponents in a Fight, White Said

Amanda Nunes and Joe Rogan

GettyAmanda Nunes and several other champs return to action in 2021.

There has been a lot of talk lately in the MMA community about the possibility of the UFC signing Harrison. And if they did, pitting her against consensus greatest female fighter of all time, UFC women’s featherweight and bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.

Harrison has never stepped inside an MMA cage to fight an opponent near the caliber of “The Lioness.” And the UFC president went as far as to say that there could be “the first death in MMA” if Nunes fought any of Harrison’s prior opponents.

“Let me put Amanda Nunes in with the girls that (Kayla has) fought, it might be the first death in MMA. OK?” White continued. “And listen, I like her. I got nothing against her. But come on, let’s be honest. Let’s be honest.”

At this time, it’s unclear where Harrison will land, whether it be in the UFC, back to PFL, or to another promotion, like Bellator.

Nunes is the UFC’s only reigning two-division champion right now and has a professional MMA record of 21-4.

Harrison Has Won a PFL Tournament Twice, Has 10 Wins By Finish

All Harrison knows in MMA is winning.

The judo queen has won all 12 of her MMA bouts, securing 10 of those victories via finish. She’s taken out five opponents by submission and five by TKO.

She’s won two PFL tournaments as a lightweight, receiving $1 million in 2021 and 2019. She holds notable wins over the likes of Taylor Guardado, Larissa Pacheco and Genah Fabian.

When considering the most exciting possible fights for Harrison, two names come to mind. As mentioned earlier, a clash with Nunes would be a spectacular thing to watch. Also, locking Harrison inside the Bellator cage with current 145-pound champion Cris Cyborg is a recipe for a blockbuster event.

How Biden’s immigration plan would affect colleges | Higher Ed Dive

Dive Brief:

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to unveil an immigration bill on Inauguration Day that would allow certain unauthorized students to apply for permanent residence and increase the number of work and family visas available.

Biden will also pitch an eight-year pathway to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants, The Washington Post first reported. The legislation would immediately allow those in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to apply for green cards.

Higher education experts said the proposal would create a more welcoming environment for unauthorized and international students, though it’s unclear how it will fare in Congress.

Dive Insight:

The incoming administration’s approach to immigration contrasts that of the outgoing one, which pushed policies that make it harder for unauthorized and international students to study in the U.S.

The cornerstone of Biden’s proposal is a direct pathway to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants. Qualifying applicants could receive a green card after being placed under temporary status for five years, according to The Post. They could seek citizenship three years later.

However, immigrants with DACA or a protected status for those fleeing war-torn or disaster-struck countries will be able to apply for green cards right away. DACA was created in 2012 to shield unauthorized immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation.

This approach recognizes that DACA beneficiaries have been waiting for a chance to obtain permanent residence, said Gaby Pacheco, director of advocacy and communications for TheDream.Us, which awards college scholarships to unauthorized students. “We’re talking about eight years of people already being in the system,” she said.

Green cards will enable DACA recipients to apply for federal financial aid, which they’re currently barred from accessing, as well as state grants. Some would also newly qualify for in-state college tuition.

The eight-year pathway to citizenship, meanwhile, benefits students who aren’t covered by DACA, said Miriam Feldblum, executive director of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. Of the roughly 450,000 unauthorized students attending a college or university in the U.S., only about half are eligible for or participating in DACA, according to a report last year.

“It’s important from the perspective of higher education that the pathway to certainty, to stability, to a future doesn’t stop with DACA recipients but encompasses the broader undocumented student population,” Feldblum said.

Biden’s immigration proposal may face hurdles in Congress. Though two recent Senate run-off elections in Georgia gave Democrats narrow control of the chamber, they will need to win over some Republicans to pass the legislation.

The plan also includes changes that could benefit international students, as well as instructors and researchers, such as making more employment- and family-based visas available.

That would likely spur more foreign students to come to the U.S., said Jenny Lee, an education policy professor at the University of Arizona. “We do know that international students, particularly graduate students, come to the United States not just for quality education but also to find a better life for themselves and their families,” Lee said. “That means finding job opportunities.”

The number of international students in the U.S. declined for the first time in over a decade during the 2019-20 academic year, according to the annual Open Doors report

The drop followed several Trump administration policies that were hostile to international students, including banning visitors from several Muslim-majority countries. Though the order carved out some exemptions for students, higher ed groups argued it hampered colleges’ ability to recruit from these countries.  Biden has vowed to reverse the travel ban on his first day.

But Feldblum said Biden should also implement a national strategy for recruiting and retaining international students. “The world has not stood still,” she said. “And we are behind the curve.”
