MONMOUTH, Ore.– Western Oregon University is proud to partner with the nation’s largest scholarship and success program for immigrant youth, TheDream.US, to help more Dreamers achieve their college and career goals. This year, Western Oregon University will welcome 13 new scholars to campus, joining the dozens of other returning scholars at Western.
The new Scholars starting their academic journeys at Western are part of the largest-ever cohort of TheDream.US Scholars – more than 1,800 new scholars across the country are attending more than 80 institutions.
“It is an honor to work with The Dream.US to support a pathway for undocumented students to pursue their college education,” said Vice President for Student Affairs, Tina Fuchs. “ Our dedicated staff and faculty walk side-by-side with our Dreamer scholars on their journey at Western, celebrating every important milestone along the way. We stand committed to providing ongoing support and assistance to address their academic, financial, and personal needs, culminating in the completion of their college degree.”

Tarpon Isle Mansion is set to become the most expensive home ever sold in the state of Florida, mainly due to it being located on the only private island in Palm Beach; however, the backyard swimming pool also has something to do with its luxurious price. The pool consists of three bodies of water: a main swimming pool, a hot spa and a cold plunge, all of which are perfectly level. The hot spa and cold plunge have the same interior layouts for ease of access and symmetry.
The entire vessel is so large that it had to be supported by 92 individual helical piles. Mosaicist Inc. designed, manufactured and installed custom “lighter palm beach blue” color tone tile with a perimeter border floor inlay to match the decking inlay. This pool is equipped with three of the highest efficiency gas heaters. This property’s elegance is not in any one element, but rather, in its entirety, which includes the swimming pool.

This bold backyard design creates a large exercise and entertainment space with plenty of shade from the Texas sun. The infinity-edge pool measures over 70 feet long, and provides alluring views of the lake hidden in the foreground beyond the range of the photo. The customer wanted volleyball and basketball capabilities as well as diving, so designer Erin Kidd drew up the pool to accommodate these sports, and made the oversized hot tub the focal point as you emerge from the house, all in accordance with the customer’s wishes. The project was completed in April of 2022.

Incorporated in 1949 as Carter Construction, Ike’s Carter Pools is one of the few builders with more than 70 years in the business, and that experience shows in this subtle yet artistically powerful design/build project. Designer Erik “Ike” Eikevik drew up this lovely seaside entertainment and relaxation mecca which features complementary vertical and horizontal pieces interlocking to present an integrated whole. The backyard setting is framed with an attractive decking pattern, achieved with grass and imbedded 16-by-24-inch Aspen White Marble tiles, surrounding the centerpiece 52-foot vanishing-edge pool which varies from 3 to 5 feet in depth.

The scale of this vanishing-edge project is breathtaking, as it includes a 75-foot lap lane catch-basin for the vanishing-edge overflow. And that’s just for starters. The main attraction is the 24 1/2-by-40-foot main pool flanked by fire and surrounded by a spillover spa, intimate grotto, full-featured fire pit, covered outdoor seating and much more. And check out those slab stairs descending to the grounds below — gorgeous! Designer Chadd Jovanelly has created a true masterpiece of backyard aquatic art, framed in porcelain tile. The project was finished in July of last year.

For this Gold-winning, traditional swimming pool, the homeowner asked that designer Paul Oman incorporate a number of Greco- Roman elements. For example, eight columns stand tall alongside one side of the pool, which are topped with three fire elements. In addition, panning down into the pool, a custom glass tile mosaic is visible both from above as well as through a large, acrylic window installed in the sunken sitting area, which is located between two tanning ledges and bridges the gap between the pool and spa.
The design also boasts many opportunities to entertain, including an outdoor kitchen and patio, and for sports lovers, an in- pool basketball hoop and volleyball net, as well as an inground trampoline. At night, waterfalls and laminars are lit to provide a spectacular nightscape in conjunction with the homeowner’s landscape lighting. A long fire table, set inside the sunken sitting area, also helps to illuminate the space at night.

The contemporary look, the work of Erik “Ike” Eikevik, extends from the main pool (measuring 46-feet-by-24-feet) to the fire feature and spa, all encased in stunning sandblasted gray marble decking. The lighting design is world class, with just the right level of carefully chosen illumination to present this piece of aquatic art, beautifully photographed by Jimi Smith.
This well-executed project, designed by Scott Barber, boasts a luxurious, geometric swimming pool complete with a raised spa and four bar stools. Three fire bowls — along with ample seating around a fire pit table and intentional landscape and pool lighting— help to make the backyard a stunning nighttime oasis. Lush landscaping provides a finishing touch, giving homeowners the ultimate in-home getaway experience, right inside their secluded courtyard.

This homeowner was adamant with Aqua Technics Pools about having a pool and spa combination from the very beginning. This was because the idea of having a hot soak during a chilly winter night was so appealing. A hand dig was required of this project due to limited backyard access. The pool was a part of an extensive backyard renovation, which transformed what was once a plain, unattractive grass area into a stunning outdoor entertaining space. A mix of materials were used to create the contemporary, industrial aesthetic of the home’s architecture. Elements, such as the stone clad feature walls, honed aggregate surrounds and black aluminum fencing all work together to create the desired, modern look.
Designer Scott Barber outdid himself on this massive backyard project. The daring freeform swimming pool features a sunken fire pit that can be entered from a number of different directions: from a stone bridge over the lazy river or from a tanning shelf (one of the total) attached to it.
Designed to give a feeling of luxury and comfort, a large seating area was included, surrounded by picturesque rain curtains, to help the homeowner both entertain and relax. While the children enjoy the massive slide and jumping rock, parents can also unwind in the 360-degree spa. The breathtaking oasis also features an extensive patio, so those looking to stay dry can also join in on the fun.

The goal in this project design was to create a private paradise that fit seamlessly with the natural prairie surroundings of the property, while simultaneously appearing modern, something Cori Thiede, the designer, accomplished quite well. The homeowners have multiple children who love the escape and excitement of a backyard swimming pool. Swimming Pool Services further helped build this backyard oasis so that it was both enjoyable and safe. The brick on the house was nicely complimented by using a warm-toned patio color. The rustic modern style was further incorporated through the darker patio accents and the green landscaping.

This daring swimming pool, designed by Cloonan Design Services and executed by High-Tech Pools (North Olmsted, Ohio), features five bodies of water: the main pool, the catch pool, the climbing pool, the slide pool and the spa — so it’s no wonder this project took home Gold in the “Technical/Engineering Achievement” category.
Before building the pool, High-Tech Pools had to remove an existing pool and cut through feet of solid rock in order to fit the new one pictured, which features a number of unique elements. The main pool, for example, has a vanishing edge on two sides, with the other two sides deck-to-water level. The long, negative edge flows into a catch pool, and the short, negative edge flows into an invisible gutter at the top of the climbing wall, while a weir shoots water down the wall — all while keeping the two bodies of water separate.
The climbing wall pool is its own body of water that flows into the slide pool and provides water for the weir, which makes up the illusion of a short, negative edge spilling into the side pool. This enabled High- Tech Pools to handle water in transit from the upper pools’ negative edge and deck-to-water level without impacting the operations of the climbing pool and slide pool. In addition, the spa is a raised, 360-degree, negative- edge spa that has its own filtration system.

The client wanted to give a fresh breath of life to a plaster pool that had fallen into disrepair, but what made this pool renovation particularly exciting for the crew at AquaTerra Outdoors (Carrollton, Texas) was the broad scope of the work. This project includes not just a custom remodel of the swimming pool and spa, but the addition of LED pool lighting, landscape lighting, and includes the addition of a lounge, landscaping, synthetic turf, fire features and more. What draws the eye is the original and appealing shape of the pool, deck design, the cascading overflow weirs and especially the well-placed sun-shelving. This is a pool where bathers will converse, relax and gaze at the Texas sky listening to the comforting sound of falling water. The image belies the scale of the vessel — it measures 43 feet long and 30 feet wide, and runs 3 feet to 5 and 1/3 feet in depth. This pool was completed in May of last year.

The pool centerline can be viewed from the home’s family room of this Claffey Pools project. Mike Farley’s design goal was to keep the rectangular pool simple, with walk-on lids for the automatic cover. This blended with the rectangular Travertine pavers for the patio and the porches, which were covered as well to further blend the spaces together. Turf accents created unified geometry of the space and added some landscaping, along with the pots on each column. Additional landscaping provided a buffer from the patio to the retaining wall. The retaining wall used stone to match the house and the cap matched the patio. The fire pit access stairs were centered on the game room doors and placed the fire pit safely out of the tree root zones. Synthetic turf added other activity space at the lower level. Understated gushers provide the sound to complete this tranquil tailored setting.

The spillways on the zero- edge spa disappear into a slot edge that disappears into subterranean basins, offering the ultimate mirrored surface. (The spa has a glass fence barrier while the wet deck fountain has no barrier as it is less than 18 inch deep.)

Designed for outdoor living features spanning across a large outdoor footprint, Aura Black was crafted by the Ryan Hughes Design Build team as a supreme venue for events and entertainment, all within a protective enclosure. Some elements featured within and around the custom pool are an enticing stepping stone entry, an all-glass infinity- edge spa, a swim-up bar, dual waterfall walls, a massive sunken fire lounge and an outdoor kitchen. Marble, porcelain, and faux turf are used on surfaces throughout Aura Black’s outdoor space.
This delightful installation shows how charming an 8-by-8 portable spa can be in the right setting. Here, composite decking on two sides offers foot-friendly access in a simple, classy design by Nicole Baldree which draws bathers into the space and directs their focus to the lush grounds beyond. A few potted plants and succulents spa-side complete the uncomplicated but inviting picture.

The black coating and black rim accentuate the spectacular reflection of the sphere and its surroundings. The pool also features all the spectacular builder’s best equipment, such as an integrated automatic cleaning system, a powerful filtration system, salt treatment and a heating system to extend the swimming season.

This project was built by Water World Windows to be a large, competition pool. With incredible panoramic windows, both the internal and external views of the space are mesmerizing. The pool was named after the facility it was built in: Emily Wellness & Spa Center, which is located in the Emily Resort in Ukraine. It is equipped with two pumps, three sand filters and an underwater music system, so synchronized swimmers can partake in their competitions.

Ever since the middle of last season, Isiah Pacheco has been the lead running back in the Kansas City Chiefs offense. He has been able to wow with his power, ability to bounce off contact and intense running style. But more importantly, the Rutgers product has begun to gain more trust and can be counted on at any moment within the Chiefs offense. Last week, Pacheco was the biggest difference in Kansas City’s victory. His workload has also been growing, the more that he continues to have success.
Overall, Isiah Pacheco has been seen as the perfect style of running back for this current Chiefs offense. KC has usually leaned on more shifty and nimble rushers under this regime. Yet, this tougher, more hard-nosed running back gives the Chiefs the different kind of pace they need.
Recently, the trends show that the more Isiah Pacheco receives touches, the greater the overall offensive day for Kansas City. With the Chiefs being able to trust him at any moment, they know that the running back can close out any game. Let’s kick it off.
Offensive Teammates Motivated By Young Running Back
To say that Isiah Pacheco gives the Chiefs offense a jolt of energy, that would be an understatement. This is something that can be felt through the screen when watching a Kansas City game live. Whenever he gets in the open field, every step seemingly looks like the first one out of the blocks, so to speak. It must feel like the ground is shaking when Pacheco takes off, while still being able to change direction swiftly and be nimble.
All told, Isiah Pacheco and his play style is being recognized at every turn. That is especially true, given how his offensive teammates talk about him in Kansas City. Chiefs guard Trey Smith discussed the interesting moment where Pacheco did a few push-ups last Sunday and how that was motivating.
“That’s Pop. That’s why we love him,” Smith said. “When you see your back over doing push-ups, I’m like, ‘Damn, I’m a little tired, but I need to block harder for Pop.’ It’s always a good thing when you have an energetic running back.”
Patrick Mahomes was also aware of how much this last game meant to Isiah Pacheco. The New Jersey native was back playing in his home state for the first time in the NFL. Mahomes talked about the added focus of Pacheco last week.
“I could see it from the first snap,” Mahomes stated. “You could see it in his eyes. He did a great job. He made some big runs when we really needed them.”
Andy Reid Recognizes Pacheco’s Immense Impact
In this past game, the running game had to be able to create a spark. Chunk gains were absolutely necessary for the Chiefs to emerge victorious. Given the issues of the passing game and the play of New York’s secondary, the Jets were forced to corral Isiah Pacheco. It was not like their defense was unable to complete run fits or be in position to make stops. Nonetheless, Pacheco was able to find extra, hidden yards on plenty of runs. Head coach Andy Reid was appreciative of his hard running in that Sunday night game.
“Yeah, consistency is what you’re looking for. Obviously, when people know that you’re a good player, you know they’re going to try new things to stop you. So it’s important that the offensive line and tight ends are here on the same page, and they all do their job and make things happen,” Reid said. “But the one thing you’re gonna get from him, he’s gonna go 100 miles an hour and run hard every time he gets an opportunity. Whether he catches it or runs it, he’s going hard.”
Reid also mentioned that Isiah Pacheco is a high-octane player at every moment. This is not limited to only a few moments within a game. Additionally, it has been talked about how intense of a runner Pacheco can be, even in practice.
Able To Be Counted On
We mentioned above, the workload of Isiah Pacheco has been growing. This has been increasing each week so far this season. On one hand, he is having success seemingly every time he touches the rock. Meanwhile, Pacheco has also proved that he can close out games, get those tough yards for necessary first downs and has improved as a pass catcher. That allows for the Kansas City Chiefs offense and coaching staff to lean on him and count on him heavily, as a result.
His rushing attempts went up at least a few times each game this year. His carries went from eight to 12 after Week 2. In Week 3, Isiah Pacheco totaled 15 carries. He finally tallied 20 carries last Sunday. He has averaged 4.91 yards per carry so far this season. And in some games this year, Pacheco generated plus rushing yards over expected, according to Next Gen Stats. That is based on the difference between actual rushing yards and expected rushing yards on an individual play.
If those strong results continue for Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs offense can begin to churn out games in a variety of ways. That is crucial as the season gets deeper for Kansas City. When you look at opponents on the schedule late in the season, the Chiefs will continue to trust Pacheco to be a major difference maker.

A pretty heavy month. As promised in the last instalment, this present In Memoriam completes the list for August. The most appropriate song here may be Canadian singer-songwriter Richard Laviolette’s Funeral Song. In 2010 he anticipated: “When I choose to die…” Thirteen years later he exited by assisted suicide, having suffered from Huntington’s disease.
The Parrothead-in-Chief
Some US acts just don’t travel well. One such singer is Jimmy Buffett, who was absolutely huge and indeed a cult figure in the States but not widely known outside North America. He was known mostly as a good-time music merchant — his signature song Margaritaville defined that image — but he was a very competent folk and country musician and songwriter.
His fans were dedicated, to the extent that they had a collective name: Parrotheads. A smart businessman, Buffet was said to be the world’s richest musician. His image — the Hawaii-shirted, cocktail-swilling good-time boy on a Florida yacht — gave me an impression that Buffett probably was a Republican. Not so. He was a politically engaged Democrat, and changed the lyrics to his songs to state his opposition to people like Donald Trump, at the risk of alienating conservative Parrotheads. He also was involved in a lot of disaster relief efforts.
The Dream Weaver
Another active Democrat departed the day after Buffet in Gary Wright, for whom death must have come as a release from dementia. A co-founder of Spooky Tooth, Wright had hits with the band and then on his own, especially 1976’s double whammy of Dream Weaver and Love Is Alive, both US #2 hits.
Wright also played on hits of others. He did keyboard duty on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass album, Ringo Starr’s Back Off Boogaloo and It Don’t Come Easy, and on Nilsson’s mega-hit Without You.
The Marvelette
With the death of Katherine Anderson, the line-up of The Marvelettes that did songs like Don’t Mess With BiIl, Too Many Fish In The Sea, Danger! Heartbreak Dead Ahead, and I’ll Keep Holding On, are all gone now. Only one of the classic line-up of The Marvelettes up to 1963 is still alive (that’s the Please Mr Postman, Playboy, Beechwood 4-5789 era). Sole survivor Juanita Cowart left the group in 1963, but is still with us today.
Anderson, who never was the regular lead singer, stayed with the group until 1969. Georgeanna Gordon died in 1980, Gladys Horton in 2011, founding member Georgia Dobbins (1960-61) in 2020, and Wanda Young in 2021.
The Whistler
For some reason, I have never had much interest in the music of Roger Whittaker, who has died at 87. Maybe it’s because his folk music was so lacking in edge, or perhaps because he was so popular with the adult audiences of Germany, where he was a superstar. He had an affable charm which I (unfairly) interpreted as ingratiating, at a time when I was in rebellion against the “Spiessertum” (the square society) of Germany. Maybe I just didn’t like his maths-teacher goatee. Later, I boycotted the guy on principle, for his touring South Africa during the anti-apartheid cultural boycott.
Whittaker’s death made me revisit his legacy. He had some fine songs, but I was not wrong in finding them lacking in edge. How much better they might have been… Whittaker also recorded the original version of the Bette Midler hit Wind Beneath My Wings.
Whitakker was rightly renowned for his extraordinary whistling, which sounded more like an expertly-played flute than the aggressively out-of-tune efforts you and I might attempt as we do the washing up.
It appears that Roger was a likable sort of chap. He suffered tragedy in 1989 when his father was murdered and his mother tortured for eight hours during a house robbery in Kenya, where Roger was born. He spoke about it with pain but also with a refusal to hate, which under the circumstances testifies to a good sense of decency.
The Protest Singer
A frequent collaborator with Pete Seeger, folk singer Len Chandler may be best known for writing the ditty Beans In My Ears, a 1964 hit for The Serendipity Singers — which got banned by many radio stations as a health hazard, in case idiots or children were moved by the song to actually put beans in their ears. But most of his stuff was better than that.
The classically trained oboist left Ohio in 1957 for New York, and ended up being a fixture on the Greenwich Village folk scene. Chandler released two albums in the 1960s, but neither was a hit.
Chandler was politically active, first in the civil right movement and later in Jane Fonda’s anti-war F.T.A. tour. He also wrote for the Black Panther Party. At the March on Washington in 1963, Chandler was invited by Martin Luther King Jr to sing the traditional song Keep Your Eyes On The Prize. His backing singers that day included Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. King would also use Chandler’s Keep On Keepin’ On after making speeches.
In 1971, Chandler moved to Los Angeles where he co-founded the Los Angeles Songwriters Showcase, which gave initial exposure to people like Stephen Bishop, Stevie Nicks and Karla Bonoff.
The Associate
As co-founder, co-lead singer and songwriter with The Association, Terry Kirkman had a series of US Top 10 hits between 1966 and 1968: Cherish, Never My Love, Windy, Along Comes Mary, and Everything That Touches You. The first and last in that list were written by Kirkman. He took lead or co-lead vocals on those songs as well as on Never My Love.
Before The Association, Kirkman played with a pre-Mothers Frank Zappa, and the precursor band of The Association, called Inner Tube which at one point included fellow masters of harmonising David Crosby and Cass Elliott. The Association — who, like The Mamas & The Papas and, initially, The Byrds, were backed by musicians of The Wrecking Crew — played at Monterey in 1967. The group was nominated for six Grammys, but won none.
Kirkman left The Association in 1972, rejoined later, but mostly left music to become an addiction counsellor.
The TV Star
He was best known as the Russian secret agent Illya Kuryakin in the TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E, or maybe as medical examiner Dr Mallard in the series NCIS, but Scottish actor David McCallum was also an accomplished musician. He grew up in a family of musical professionals — his father was the leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra — and himself received classical musical training.
McCallum recorded four albums, produced by jazz innovator David Axelrod, who also wrote some of the material, as did the actor himself. These tracks include McCallum’s best-known one, The Edge, which Dr Dre sampled for The Next Episode. McCallum played various instruments, especially the oboe, and conducted. One thing he didn’t do was to sing; where his vocals were required, he spoke. He later also contributed to various spoken-word albums.
On one occasion, McCallum did sing, and did so well. In an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., he played guitar and sang his own composition, titled Trouble, with Nancy Sinatra. See it here.
The Bass Man
The reputation of upright-bass player Richard Davis resides mostly in his contribution to jazz, but he has also been hailed for his appearances on rock albums.
In rock music, his greatest contribution was as bassist and de facto bandleader in the recording of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks. Noted critic Greil Marcus wrote it was “the greatest bass ever heard on a rock album”. He also backed acts like Laura Nyro, Buffalo Springfield, The Rascals, Spanky & Our Gang, Astrud Gilberto, Melanie, Donny Hathaway, Marlena Shaw, Zulema, Garland Jeffreys, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Manchester, Janis Ian, Carly Simon, Loudon Wainwright III, Phoebe Snow, Blondie, and others.
In jazz, he played with the likes of Sarah Vaughan, Don Shirley, Roland Kirk, Elvin Jones, Gil Evans, Eric Dolphy, Carmen McRae, Hubert Laws, Maynard Ferguson, Cal Tjader, Chet Baker, Milt Jackson, Earl Hines, Shirley Scott, Jimmy McGriff, Wes Montgomery, Gabor Szabo, Oscar Peterson, Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Mann, Joe Zawinul, Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra, George Benson, Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders, Walter Wanderley, Freddie Hubbard, Quincy Jones, Louis Armstrong, Dexter Gordon, Duke Ellington, Willie Bobo, Joe Henderson, Milt Jackson, Grover Washington Jr, Roy Ayers, Sonny Stitt, Ahmad Jamal, Stan Getz, Don Sebesky, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, Gil Evans, and others.
The Pianist
Jazz piano man Frank Owens was on his way to a playing a gig when he was involved in a traffic accident which ended his 90-year-long life. He released only two albums, one of them jazz interpretations of the Oliver! soundtrack, but he backed some big names in music, most notably Bob Dylan on tracks such as Like A Rolling Stone, Mr Tambourine Man, Maggie’s Farm, It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding), It’s All Over Now (Baby Blue), Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues, Highway 61 Revisited, and others.
Other acts he backed include Louis Armstrong, Sonny Stitt, Johnny Mathis, Astrud Gilberto, John Denver, B.B. King, Lena Horne, Ruth Brown, Marlena Shaw, Melba Moore, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Frankie Valli, Ashford & Simpson, Johnny Nash, Connie Francis, Irene Cara, Freda Payne, Joe Bataan, Petula Clark, and many others.
He also served as David Letterman’s first bandleader.
The Real Plastic
One of my favourite songs as I turned 12 years old was Plastic Bertrand’s Ça Plane Pour Moi, a power pop song dressed up as French punk (it was intended as a parody of punk). I liked it so much, I bought the LP. The album was rubbish (though the gatefold cover was cool), but that didn’t diminish my love for the hit song. What eventually stained my happy memories was learning that Plastic Bertrand was not the vocalist. The real singer was the song’s Belgian writer and producer, Lou Deprijck, who has died at 77.
Before he Milli Vanilli-ed punk, Deprijk was part of the disco-pop trio Two Man Sound, who had hits with Charlie Brown and Disco Samba. Later he discovered and produced French-Belgian singer Viktor Lazlo, best-known for her 1987 hit Breathless.
Deprijk is the fourth bestselling Belgian ever — after Salvatore Adamo (who tops the list by a mile), Frédéric François, and Jacques Brel — with 20 million records sold, including the Plastic Bertrand LP I foolishly bought in 1978.As always, this post is reproduced in illustrated PDF format in the package, which also includes my personal playlist of the featured tracks. Latin Night did a number on the 13 contestants left on Dancing with the Stars with a massive change on the leader board from top to bottom. Some of last week’s leaders really faltered, with five couples actually dropping their scores, while two climbed from the basement and soared.
In other words, whatever you thought you knew about who was killing it in this competition could be thrown out the window. That also goes for this week’s eliminated celebrity, who shouldn’t have been in danger at all, were it not for viewer votes. Without a judges’ save, it’s all down to America, and they continue to make unexpected choices.
Things were even tougher for BacheloretteCharity Lawson, who was atop the leader board last week. This week, her partner Artem Chigvintsev tested positive for Covid, thrusting her into the arms of another partner already in Week 2. Could she handle that transition?
Could Mauricio Umansky rebound from being in the Bottom 2 last week? How about Tyson Beckford and Harry Jowsey, who tied for the lowest scores from the judges last week? This show is all about improvement, so could these guys make that happen?
We’re still a little surprised at this week’s results and who went home after what went down across these two hours. So while we take a moment to try and collect ourselves and make sense of it, you can start making your way through these dances and see what you think.
Who do I think I am? you ask. Well, I spent nearly a decade of my life sweating and bleeding to the music as a dancer. From a young boy learning a shuffle-ball-change to performing with the St. Louis Ballet Company, I experienced the ups and downs of one of the most difficult physically demanding sports on the planet. During this time, I was also a member of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, as well as a gymnast, writer and cartoonist. I had a lot more energy in my younger years. And I’ve spent the last twenty years analyzing and critiquing reality competition shows for various media publications. I’ve got this.
Fair warning, since I’m safe at home, I’m probably going to be a little harsher than my colleagues Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli. But I might be nicer, too. Maybe.
(Samba – “Gasalina,” Daddy Yankee) Lele was feeling good about the style and the song, reaching into her Venezuelan roots to try and pull out her sexiest, most commanding Latin performance ever. She definitely was feeling the song, which she says she’s danced to before, and she had some nice movement with Brandon. We were hoping for a little more rapid staccato movement and tightness in her footwork to match that swivel in her hips. She had everything happening correctly, she just needs to keep cleaning up the work.

(Salsa – “Aguanilé,” Willie Colón & Héctor Lavoe) Props to Jenna and Tyson for pulling off some pretty risky lifts in Week 2. He definitely loosened up a bit from the premiere, but not nearly enough. He needs to work on loosening his hips some more so a swivel is more than just a thrust (some side to side would work well, too). He’s still a lot too heavy, lumbering around the stage a bit, but we saw a little more grace in his movement and finesse in being where he needs to be. He’s barely thinking about his arms (and it shows) as he focuses on improving his footwork. It’s good to see growth.

(Cha-cha-cha – “Oye Cómo Va,” Tito Puente) Peta kept this one slow and steady to help Barry out, and it was great seeing his passion and conviction in the performance. He needs to watch those heel leads as it leaves him looking flat-footed and heavier in a style that should be light and moving. There was a distinct lack of grace in a lot of his movement as he walked, rather than danced, across the stage at points and it felt as if he was even a little too intense for the cha-cha style. He was definitely there for Peta as needed, but he’s got a ways to go yet as we didn’t feel that we saw growth or improvement.

(Samba – “Taki Taki” DJ Snake f. Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B) Adrian took to this style the way Frankenstein’s monster took to walking his first time off the table. It was so incredibly stiff throughout, as if all he wanted to do was make sure he was physically where he was supposed to be at each moment and kind of looked like he was doing a samba. There was almost no musicality, no presence, no personality in his delivery at all. He said he was going to show the family man smile, but there wasn’t much to smile about here. This might have been a (very heavy) step backwards.

(Salsa – “Bailando,” Enirique Iglesias) Mira consistently gave us about 80 percent of the dance she was trying to deliver. We could see her in her head and maybe that was why she didn’t quite give fully to any of the movements in the dance. It was all a bit withdrawn and inward expressing rather than outward. The moves were there, she’s got the grace to really open up and shine on this style, but it was as if her nerves and anxiety and a severe lack of confidence had her dancing at a whisper rather than a euphoric shout.

(Salsa – “Don’t Go Yet,” Camila Cabello) It was certainly interesting seeing Xochitl perform this in sneakers, which left things a little off as she was on her heels a bit more than we would have liked. Mostly, though, she delivered a lot of fast movement and a real sense of energy that felt right for the dance. It was kinetic and contagious, leaving us smiling right along with her. Yeah, they pretty much botched that last lift entirely, but she conquered a fear of heights with two big jumps and really brought the ballroom alive in a way we’d not seen yet tonight. She was performing nonstop and we could have watched that on and on and on.

(Samba – “Me Porto Bonito,” Bad Bunny & Chencho Corleone) We saw a little resistance in the samba rolls moving forward, but we were definitely feeling the ferocity of her attitude. Those opening moves were a lot of fun, but those closing moves were either supposed to be a fraction of their fullness or she didn’t execute them properly at all. Throughout, she had some hesitation at times and wasn’t quite sunk into the floor to really loosen up her hips as consistently as she needed. This was a tough routine and she gave a lot to it, but she definitely needs to continue working on each step and moving consistently throughout the whole dance.

(Salsa – “Quimbara,” Celia Cruz, Willie Colón, Johnny Pacheco Y Su Charanga) The first third of this dance was a night-and-day difference from his messy first week. Then, he forgot the choreography for a moment which caused him to lose his way — and then stopped at a complete loss for a moment before Emma got them back on track. It was a shame that it fell apart so badly there because that rattled his confidence down to almost nothing. Before that, we were blown away by his attack in the style and the grace of his movement. We’d love to see him dance this style clean and see how it finishes.

(Tango – “Can’t Remember to Forget You,” Shakira f. Rihanna) There was so much attack and presence throughout this dance, it was like a whole different Alyson from Week 1. We did find ourselves distracted by the tilt of her hand on Sasha’s back in hold, and she seemed a bit too stiff overall, especially with her shoulders slightly up. Yes, we know it’s a tight hold, but there’s also a fluidity to the way the rest of the body moves below the waist to create that illusion of gliding across the floor. Don’t get us wrong, this was incredibly engaging and she really was in the pocket, we just wanted her to relax a bit more into it.

(Cha-cha-cha – “She Bangs,” Ricky Martin) With Artem Chigvintsev testing positive for Covid, Charity was given a slight disadvantage for Week 2 by having to already switch up partners. She rebounded beautifully, though, and continues to make her mark on this dance floor and make those past Bachelorette winners proud. She is off to such a strong start and really embodied the spirit of this style. Her hip movement was great, there was a sharpness in her movements, and her footwork was just about perfect through much of this. As for character, Charity was over the top with her joyousness, now if we can just get her to not sing along to the track and focus entirely on the art she’s presenting and her partnership, we can be transported with her.

(Salsa – “Arranca,” Becky G f. Omega) Rylee actually choreographed Harry standing there while she danced in front of him and he managed to make that look like your dad crashing your college party and pretending to dance in the corner but really he’d watching to make sure you behave. His moves were just about as stiff as last week, when he had them, as he lumbered around the stage. There was no liquidity in his hips or grace in his movement. Rylee looked at times like she was dancing next to a tree. We saw no notable difference from last week, despite him saying how much he wanted to improve.

(Cha-cha-cha – “”Shake Señora,” Pitbull f. T-Pain & Sean Paul) You would have thought her dress was too tight for her to move her hips at all because they were locked. She had the attitude in her face and her arms (mostly), but everything below the waist had been poured in concrete and was drying fast. It was all just so heavy and felt labored to get any movement out of her at all, which completely sucked out the sexy character of the dance. This was the g-rated version, which had no flare or excitement to it. She’s really got to relax into her own body, stop being so self-conscious or whatever is holding her back, and let herself move and feel free.

(Rumba – “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás,” Andrea Bocelli f. Jennifer Lopez) Daniella has to be one of the most exciting choreographers on the show. Not only did she and hubby Pasha nail the opening routine, but this number was sensual fire. She even brilliantly choreographed coming down the stairs! As for Jason, he had a slight misstep midway, but mostly did the partnering expected of him to help Daniella sizzle. He had a great fluid strength in his movements, painting picture after picture with her throughout the piece. This was a beautiful piece of art and he continues to rise to the top, surprising himself each week.

Charity, Ariana, and Jason were again strong, with Xochitl and Lele joining them at the top of the leader board. Meanwhile, Alyson and Tyson made huge strides this week, tied for most-improved and improving their standings considerably. Viewers love a comeback, so they should be safe this week, too.
Mauricio is all by himself at the very bottom, but we have a feeling that it won’t knock him out of the competition. That’s because he was so much improved and actually pretty strong until that missed stop derailed everything midway through. We think a sympathetic audience won’t penalize him that much for that, all things considered.
That means, we’re looking at the three acts tied just above him. Adrian, Barry, and Harry were none of them all that strong this week, while Jamie Lynn was just one point above them. The judges were a lot more bullish on her than we were, while Barry is just so lovable to watch, we suspected both of them would be safe.
That brings it down to Adrian and Harry for us, and of the two of them, it felt like Harry just didn’t improve at all. We know the judges were a little kinder with their comments to him, but from what we saw, he’s someone who just isn’t getting there. If his incremental growth this week was any indication, he won’t get there anytime soon, either.
But what did America do? There are, after all, no judges saves this season, so popularity becomes more important than ever. Would past NFL glory save Adrian? Would online fame help Harry? Would it be someone else entirely?
Sent to safety first were Alyson, Lele, Tyson, Charity, and Harry, with that last one coming as a huge surprise to us. Suddenly, we found ourselves wondering if maybe Barry wasn’t as beloved by DWTS viewers as we think, or was the audience perhaps as tough on Jamie Lynn as we were?
Ariana got the good news next, quickie followed by Mira, Xochitl, Jason, and Barry. So the love for Barry was there, as we thought, leaving Mauricio, Adrian, and Jamie Lynn lingering. They always say this is not necessarily the Bottom 3, but this week, we kind of feel like it is. We still felt that Mauricio would survive, leaving us looking at Adrian and Jamie Lynn. Of the two, Adrian actually showed the most potential.
With four people below her in judges’ scores, would Jamie Lynn actually go first? If so, it’s indicative of the power of America’s votes. Or maybe it was going to be Mauricio and America would line up with the judges, after all? They did not, as Mauricio was sent to safety, leaving Adrian and Jamie Lynn as the legitimate Bottom 2.
In the final result, it looked like a higher judges’ score wasn’t going to matter as much, with Jamie Lynn Spears having to say goodbye after just two weeks. Considering the fame her sister has for her dancing, even still today, this had to be a disappointing result for her.

The Minnesota Vikings take on the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at 3:25 PM CST. After a disappointing 0-3 start, the Vikings scraped out their first win against the Carolina Panthers last week to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the top-ten scoring offense will pose a formidable challenge for the Vikings, who seem to have found their stride. Let’s look at four keys for Brian Flores and this Minnesota defense to contain the Chiefs and keep this positive momentum going.

Without playing the opening weekend, Travis Kelce ties for fifth in targets and sixth in receptions among tight ends. It is no secret that Kelce is Mahomes’ favorite target, especially with the next volume target-getter being rookie Rashee Rice.
While Kansas City loves to get the ball to everyone and make all five eligible receivers on the field a threat, if they can get the ball to Kelce, they will. And they will do it as often as they can.
An extra eye needs to be on Kelce and force someone else to beat you like Detroit did in week one. If Rice or Skyy Moore have big days, so be it, but Minnesota has no chance if the Mahomes to Kelce connection gets going early.
What makes Mahomes so dangerous is his ability to navigate inside and outside of the pocket. His ability to find enough space to get the right throw off is borderline impossible.
Brian Flores brought pressure in a more strategic manner against Bryce Young after getting carved up at an alarming rate by Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. The career days from Herbert and receiver Keenan Allen gave Flores something to think about, and we saw a shift in philosophy against Carolina. Promising signs that this Minnesota defense has counters to different styles of play.
Keeping Mahomes uncomfortable is priority number one and a very tall task. However, Flores will have a chance to change the looks of the Minnesota defense as he sees fit to duel Andy Reid and his unique offensive sets.

This Kansas City run game used to be a sideshow to the Reid-Mahomes-Kelce theatrics in the passing game. Now, with the addition of the hard-nosed Isiah Pacheco, this run game has a chance to be just as prolific as the run game.
Seeing the creativity in the run game from Reid and getting Pacheco, Moore and McKinnon in space is impressive. Pullers are coming from everywhere, there are crack blocks that linebackers and defensive linemen don’t see coming, this running game is a ton of fun to watch. Just not to defend.
Harrison Phillips and the rest of that defensive line will be charged with keeping the run-game to a minimum and getting this offense off-script.
These are the kinds of numbers the Minnesota defense will need to keep the ball in the offense’s hands and keep Mahomes and company out of rhythm.
Dana White is a ruthless businessman – but even he struggled to watch a fighter in despair after failing to achieve his UFC dream.

Amazingly, he recovered, and the two UFC hopefuls engaged in a three-round slugfest that broke a 145lb striking record with a total of 407 strikes thrown between them.
Silva enjoyed a clear power advantage and after hurting his opponent in each round he walked away with unanimous 30-27 scorecards from the three cageside judges.
White was on his feet by the end of the fight, but Pacheco was unconcerned about putting on one of the best bouts in the show’s history and headed backstage distraught about the result.
Later, the UFC CEO went to check on the 31-year-old and tried to cheer him up by revealing he would be paid double money for putting on such an impressive performance in defeat.
However, money was the furthest thing from Pacheco’s mind.
He apologised for his performance, explained how much he wanted it and asked the big boss to keep him in mind for any short-notice UFC fights.
On Monday, Pacheco’s manager and coach, Tyson Chartier, posted footage of the backstage interaction that persuaded White to sign the 7-2 fighter.
“When I went back there, his ear is hanging off. He’s crying,” White told reporters at a post-fight press conference.

“I told him, ‘I’m going to pay your win money.’ He [couldn’t] give a f*** that I’m going to give him his win money.
“He’s crying and he said, ‘I wanted to win this fight so bad. I want to be in the UFC so bad. If there’s ever a last-minute pullout or anything, please think of me.’
“I said, ‘Oh yeah.’ I said, ‘Dude, you are right up my alley. We’re going to pay you your win money.’ I went back and told the boys, ‘We’re signing this kid.’
“If you want to be in the UFC that bad, if you want to win this fight that bad, how bad do you think he wants to win his first UFC fight?’”
The American was in the hospital when White announced the good news and found out he was the UFC’s latest signing over the phone.
Pacheco has some healing to do before making his promotional debut.
