A 55-year-old man is facing life in prison in Romania for allegedly sexually assaulting his partner with a carrot grown in their back garden.

Calin Laurentiu said he was undertaking a sex act with his 59-year-old partner and the vegetable at their home in Dambovita County, southern Romania, when she fell unconscious.

The woman, who has not been named, first agreed but then asked him to stop, it has been reported.

She is said to have died of sepsis when her body responded to an infection caused by the vegetable piercing her colon. 

Laurentiu, who is reported to have a vegetable fetish, has been accused of rape and murder.

During the alleged assault Laurentiu’s partner first allowed the carrot to be used but, after a short while, asked her partner to stop, according to local media.

He refused, claiming he was too drunk, but later realised she was unconscious, it was reported.

The man called for an ambulance, but quickly realised his partner was dead.

Speaking about what happened, he said: ‘After it occurred to me that she had died, I dressed her nicely in pyjamas.

‘I called for an ambulance initially, but then I realised it was no longer worth it. I hurt her, but I didn’t torture her with carrots. She told me to leave her alone at some point, but I went on.

‘I’m sorry about her, I didn’t mean to kill her. I loved her and she loved me. I’ll confess everything to the police and to the lawyer.’

Reports state the woman’s death was caused by a colon perforation which lead to sepsis after the perforation became infected. 

Caused by the body’s response to an infection, sepsis can lead to multiple organ failure and death.

Camelia Matei, a spokeswoman for the local Prosecutor’s Office, told reporters: ‘A criminal case was filed for rape and murder. According to our preliminary investigation, it seems that the woman’s death was due to sexual assault.’

Laurentiu reportedly faces spending the rest of his life in prison if he is found guilty.

The investigation is ongoing.
