OCFA employee who shot and dumped his pit bull is sentenced to 250 hours of community service – Orange County Register

NEWPORT BEACH — An Orange County Fire Authority employee who was charged with shooting his 4-year-old pit bull and dumping the canine’s carcass in a trash bin at his workplace in Irvine accepted a plea Wednesday that ordered him to perform 250 hours of community service.

Ryan John Monteleone of Menifee, 46, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of putting a carcass of a dead animal on the road. As part of the plea deal, a felony count of cruelty to animals was dismissed and he was placed on three years of informal probation and must complete the community service by April 1 of next year, according to court records.

Monteleone could have faced up to 3 1/2 years in custody if convicted at trial.

Monteleone worked as a heavy fire equipment operator for the fire authority for four years and was not a firefighter, Colleen Windsor, a spokeswoman for the OCFA, said when he was charged in November 2019.

He remained on duty at that time, but it was not clear if he is still on the job.

He was arrested by Irvine police on Oct. 17, 2019, according to Kimberly Edds of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

A Waste Management trash truck driver found the dog’s body inside the trash bin at a fire station on Fossil Road in Irvine on Aug. 9, 2019, Edds said. The dog had been shot in the head, she said.

Monteleone’s attorney, Rod Pacheco, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The defendant’s attorneys filed a motion in January of last year to dismiss charges based on an argument that he killed the dog at his ranch home, so the case should have been filed in Riverside County.

Monteleone’s wife told investigators that the family adopted the canine about a year before the dog was killed, but that the animal had attacked a donkey and an Amazon driver and killed a pet cat, according to the court filing.

The family previously had to put down another pet and the bill was “significant,” according to the motion. The family at the time was “suffering severe financial restraints,” so the couple decided to kill the dog, according to the motion.

The couple discussed “the challenge they faced, a dangerous pit bull that attacked pets, livestock and people, the presence of their young sons and their inability to afford a sizable veterinarian bill for putting the dangerous animal down,” the attorneys said in the court papers.

So Monteleone “took the pit bull into their barn and shot the dog one time,” according to the motion.

The following day he took the dog’s body to a dumpster near his workplace at an Irvine Fire Department Station and dumped it, the attorneys said.

Tigers 2021 Draft Day 2 coverage

The types of pitchers Detroit ended up drafting, especially in the college ranks, might have been slightly influenced from first-year Tigers pitching coach Chris Fetter, who joined Detroit after coaching at the University of Michigan. He spoke at the organization’s scouting meetings as spring began and gave ideas on the qualities he liked in college pitching.

Notable skill: The Tigers had been linked to high school shortstop Brady House with their top pick before drafting Jobe, so maybe it’s fitting that they used their top pick of Day 2 on Pacheco, whose body frame and skill set had drawn some comparisons to House. Both are left-handed hitters with power. Pacheco is a bigger slugger who worked on making more consistent contact this spring. The Tigers plan to play him at shortstop to begin his pro career, but his 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame could eventually lead him to third base, where his soft hands and arm strength should play well defensively.

Quotable: “I worked, I sacrificed a lot coming into the spring, and I really had to learn my swing,” Pacheco said. “Over the summer, I had some swing-and-miss concepts and it kind of led me to some strikeouts. Over the spring, I cut down my strikeouts. I learned my swing. I tried to keep it as simple as possible and learned what I needed to do to cut down on strikeouts, whether it’s learning what pitches I can hit, staying off that high pitch a lot of guys are swinging at these days. Just learning my swing itself and what I can do at the plate, it’s helped me a lot so far.”

Notable skill: The Tigers have long loved SEC pitchers (Casey Mize and Spencer Turnbull among them), and Smith was one of the better ones this season with a breakout spring that included 113 strikeouts (eighth-most in the conference) over 98 1/3 innings. He throws a mid-80s slider and an upper-70s curveball to complement a fastball that sits in the low 90s and tops out at 95 mph. Smith has a big frame for his 6-foot-2 height.

Notable skill: For a smaller-school pitcher, Mattison is a big guy (6-foot-4, 235 pounds) with a big arm. His fastball reached 96 mph at last month’s first MLB Draft Combine; he was one of just three pitchers to throw that hard there. He posted a 95:14 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 80 1/3 innings in his senior season for the Bulldogs on his way to NEC Pitcher of the Year honors.

Notable skill: Though Kohlhepp’s fastball reportedly reaches 99 mph, it’s usually more around the mid-90s with sink that induces weak contact, complemented by a tight slider and a changeup. He struck out 65 batters over 61 1/3 innings as a redshirt sophomore at Notre Dame, but opponents batted just .195 against him, third lowest among ACC pitchers. Kohlhepp pitched more in relief in his lone season with the Irish, but he has the arsenal to start.

Notable skill: Murr was a Rawlings Gold Glove Award-winner at first base, but the Tigers identified him as an outfielder for the Draft. He played left field out of necessity in the Wolfpack’s final game at the College World Series last month, with the roster depleted by COVID-19 protocols. Murr is more of an athletic contact hitter than a slugger, batting .319 with seven homers, 16 doubles and three triples.

Quotable: “We were really comfortable with his bat,” Pleis said. “We’ve seen him play the outfield and first base and do some things. He’ll probably do both, with the way we do it now. [Tigers manager] A.J. [Hinch] likes versatility, which I think is great, so we’re more apt to use guys in different places and see how they react and see what they can do.”

Notable skill: Hurter is a big (6-foot-6, 250 pounds) lefty, but his pitching strength is more command than power. He throws a fastball that approaches the mid 90s for ground balls and sets up a sharp slider. He missed his junior season in 2020 due to Tommy John surgery and returned to Georgia Tech this spring for his senior year.

Notable skill: Marks’ fastball has steadily ticked up from an average of 87 mph in 2019 to 90 mph last year to 92 mph this spring, reaching as high as 98 mph this season. He not only throws four- and two-seam fastballs, but he can locate both to change eye level on hitters. The junior set school records with 10 wins and 101 strikeouts over 95 2/3 innings this season while winning Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year honors.

Notable skill: Schultz can run, rating as high as 70 on a scouting grade according to MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis. He stole 22 bases in 24 attempts this year in his junior season at UK, good for second in the SEC, while posting a .329 average and a .401 on-base percentage. He has enough speed to play second base or center field in pro ball.

Danny Trejo On How Narrowly Dodging The Gas Chamber While Imprisoned In The 60s Scared Him Straight – BroBible

You don’t need a 3-day retreat with Tony Robbins or Gary Vee to come to your house and spit in your pillow to reach the epiphany that your dreams can come true.

All you need to do is read the Wikipedia page of Danny Trejo, who bounced around California’s most notorious prisons in the 60s only to appear in hundreds of movies and walk the red carpet with A-listers like Val Kilmer and Jennifer Lopez.

The 77-year-old Trejo, who is 70 years removed from executing his first drug deal, was kicked out of at least five high schools before he entered the system, once for stabbing a boy in the face with a broken wine bottle.

Trejo appeared on our Endless Hustle to discuss the sobering moment in solitary confinement that changed his life.

Actor @officialDannyT claims he instigated a riot while in prison in the 60s, and was accused of throwing a rock at a lieutenant’s head: “That’s a gas chamber offense.”

Trejo on why he turned it all around. He’s been sober for 53 years.

“We’re in prison on Cinco de Mayo, stupidest thing in the world. They bring an outside baseball team of just one of the worst penitentiaries, Soledad, in the world. Every Mexican is drunk or loaded. And a riot ensues.

And me, Ray Pacheco, Henry Quijada were instigating a riot. People got hurt. It was alleged that I threw a rock and hit Lieutenant Givens in the head. That’s a gas chamber offense. So we’re in the hole, and I remember hearing Henry say, ‘Hey Danny, they’re going to top us, huh?’

And I remember Mrs. Findlay saying, ‘You could be the top of the class.’ And she always wrote, ‘A lot of potential but can’t sit still.’

So I’m sitting in the hole, and I might go to the gas chamber and I’m thinking, ‘What happened to all that potential?’

I wanted to die with dignity. I didn’t want to die crying, peeing my pants, and yelling. So I asked God, ‘Let me die with dignity. I will say your name every day and I’ll do what I can for my fellow inmate. And I remember saying ‘inmate’ because I thought I was never getting out of prison.”

Trejo kept his word. He hasn’t had a sip of alcohol in 53 years, rose to chairman of Alcoholics Anonymous, became the first inmate social catalyst, has been casted in hundreds of movies, owns restaurants all over the country, and is the proud owner of 10 dope ass rides. Life’s a trip.

Actor @officialDannyT is in nearly 300 movies, but tacos may be his lasting legacy.

The restaurant entrepreneur explains why his @TrejosTacos have taken off.

“People ask, ‘What’s your secret?’ There is no secret. It’s good food!”

Trejo’s book, Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood, is out now!

Massachusetts State Police Air Wing tracks stolen motor vehicle, fleeing suspects in Brockton – New Bedford Guide

Massachusetts State Police Air Wing tracks stolen motor vehicle, fleeing suspects in Brockton

“At approximately 1 a.m. on Dec. 23, Air 3 of the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, a helicopter crewed by Sgt. Gregg Spooner and Trooper Joshua Pacheco, was over Brockton when it received a Lojack hit for a stolen motor vehicle.

MSP Air 3 located the moving vehicle and directed Brockton Police and State Police patrols to its location. When a Brockton cruiser got behind the vehicle, the suspects fled at a high rate of speed, prompting a pursuit that spanned several communities, before the pursuit was terminated because of the safety threat posed to the public by the fleeing suspects.

But Air 3 continued to follow the vehicle and repeatedly updated grounds units of its changing location. Eventually, as the MSP flight crew observed from the night sky above, the suspects pulled up to the Chatham West Apartment complex in Brockton. Five suspects bailed out of the stolen vehicle and ran away onto DW Field Parkway and then into adjacent woods, as Air 3 continued to monitor their locations through its FLIR (Foward Looking InfraRed) thermal camera system and direct patrols toward them.

As seen in the video, as a result of the Air Wing’s overflight support, State Troopers and Brockton Officers were able to locate the suspects hiding in the woods and took them into custody. The incident underscored the valuable capabilities that our Air Wing, which operates out of air bases in Plymouth, Lawrence, and Westover, provides to MSP and our local police partners.

These DeWALT power tools were recalled because they can turn on unexpectedly

We reported on a DeWALT recall in early December, when a pair of rugged wireless earbuds were found to pose a fire hazard. The company that sold the headphones urged owners to stop using the product and return it for a free replacement. But that’s not the only DeWALT recall you should be aware of.

A certain type of DeWALT chainsaw poses a serious injury risk to users. The faulty units might turn on unexpectedly. Or they might turn on accidentally when first being plugged in. If you own the 18-inch DeWALT DWCS600 chainsaw, you should stop using it immediately.

DeWALT announced the chainsaw recall earlier this week. The announcement is available at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website. But the company also has a “Safety notices and recalls” page on its own website where the recall will be listed.

Here’s how DeWALT describes the hazard:

The chain saw can remain running when the switch is on the off position or turn on when plugged in, posing an injury hazard to the user.

DeWALT sold about 8,500 chainsaws between June 2021 and November 2021. The devices cost between $130 and $150 during that timeframe.

The chainsaws in this DeWALT recall have the company’s signature yellow with a black handle and motor cover. “DeWALT” and “18-in.” are written on the blade, as seen in the image below.

If you own or operate multiple chainsaws, you should be looking for the DWCS600 model. It’s a “Type 1 18-inch 15-amp corded” chainsaw.

Of note, the recall involves only the chainsaws with date codes 2021 23-H5 to 2021 40-H5 on the bottom of the chainsaw, behind the chain/bar.

What you should do

DeWALT says it has not received any reports of injuries at this time. But you should stop using any chainsaws bearing the identification codes above. The risk remains, as the device can power on unexpectedly. This can lead to serious injury for people near the product. It can also cause property damage.

DeWALT’s recall proposes a simple fix for the problem. Buyers should contact the company to receive a pre-paid shipping label so they can return the chainsaw to DeWALT. The company will then send a free replacement chainsaw that does not suffer from the issues outlined in the recall notice.

Make sure you read the full DeWALT chainsaw recall announcement on the CPSC website. It includes all the contact information for DeWALT that you might need to initiate your replacement process.

While you are managing your recalls, make sure you also check out the DeWalt Jobsite Pro wireless earphone recall from late 2021. Those wireless headphones pose a fire and burn hazard. They can literally burst into flames while you’re wearing them. You should stop using these headphones and return them immediately to get a replacement.
