Mahomes was only on the field to honor Len Dawson, it was Henne and Buechele getting most of the snaps. Henne looked less than sharp, while Buechele had a couple nice plays and hasn’t looked terrible throughout the preseason. Which begs the question.

Should Buechele get Henne’s job?

I’ve been calling for Henne to be replaced for a while now, but I’m skeptical it will happen. The team seems to love him, and going with an unproven guy like Buechele is very risky. But it’s something fans will be talking about while we wait for the real games to start.

Starting Defense Looks Sharp Again

Amazing how fast this new 1st team defense is without Neiman and Hitch!

This is the alleged play that caused #Chiefs rookie CB Trent McDuffie to enter concussion protocol #ChiefsKingdom pic.twitter.com/gGbpBW4w2B

The starters on defense got two drives, and allowed a grand total of 10 yards on those drives. While you shouldn’t read too much into the preseason, they look noticeably better than last year.

The bad news is that McDuffie got hurt when making a tackle. He was put in the concussion protocol, so as of this writing it’s not clear whether he actually had a concussion or if it’s a better safe than sorry thing, but hopefully he’ll be OK and ready to go when the season actually starts.

Right Tackle?

these OTs… oooff

I’ve been talking about it all preseason, and this game was more of the same. Lucas Niang remains injured, and is officially out for the beginning of the season at least. Wylie is almost certainly going to be the starter, which is not optimal, but he’s at least a quality backup. Unfortunately, nobody else has shown much to prove that they deserve the spot over him, most disappointingly rookie Darian Kinnard, who has looked like his 5th round draft position.

Nothing in this game changed the equation. We’re just going to have to live with a subpar right tackle.

Joshua Williams’ Rough Night

Joshua Williams might wanna be sick for film study tomorrow

Joshua Williams is a 4th round rookie who had been impressive in camp and in the preseason so far, but last night was a night to forget for him. He gave up a number of receptions, got called for multiple penalties, and on the one play he played well he dropped an easy interception.

I wouldn’t panic over him yet, though. He was a guy who most didn’t expect to come in and start right away anyway, and a lot of these were just mental mistakes and not him getting dominated.

Ronald Jones and Isiah Pacheco, Runningbacks Finally Showed Up

The offense with Mahomes has looked as dominant as ever through the first 2 games, but the major concern (besides right tackle) was the abysmal running game. Nobody, including camp star Pacheco, had done much of anything in the preseason.

Ronald Jones was a camp dud, to the point where a lot of people thought he was going to get cut. But if last night was any indication he’ll easily make the team, as he got his chance and got 43 yards on 8 carries. Not the most dominant stat line ever but it’s light years better than what anybody else had shown in the previous games.

While he started slow, Pacheco started getting more snaps as the game went on and finally showed some of the potential that people were excited about. He finished with 10 carries for 52 yards, which included a 2 yard loss that the offensive line decided they didn’t want to block.
